How things work

House manual

Parking

Use the driveway, street spots directly in front of the property, or the gravel lot at the church next door. Do not park in front of neighbors or the neighboring Airbnb.

Infinity pool

The pool is available at all times. Please be mindful of noise after 10 PM. The pool light switch is on the electrical box on the long wall above the pool equipment — it's on the right side of that box.

Pergola lights

The rooftop pergola lights come on automatically at dusk and turn off at dawn. No switch needed.

Fire pit

Turn the gas valve (located on the right side of the pit) counterclockwise to open, then use the igniter button. Turn the valve clockwise to close fully when done.

How to reset the AC

If an AC unit stops responding, locate the breaker panel (in the master bedroom) and flip the corresponding breaker off, wait 10 seconds, then flip it back on. Allow 2–3 minutes to restart.

Bathroom door (under stairs)

This door has no handle — it's a sliding door. Use the edge of the door to push it to the left. It does not swing open.

Bedroom locks

Bedroom doors are locked or unlocked remotely by the host based on your group's room allocation. If you need a room opened or closed, just message us and we'll take care of it.

TV & streaming

The TVs are set up in Guest Mode. Sign in to your personal streaming accounts (Netflix, Disney+, etc.) freely. When you check out, the TV wipes all accounts automatically — no need to remember to log out before you leave.

Power outages & generator

Puerto Rico experiences occasional outages. The diesel backup generator kicks in automatically within ~60 seconds and powers the whole house. No action needed.

Water & cistern

The property has a rooftop cistern. If municipal water pressure drops, the cistern takes over automatically. Water is safe to use throughout.

Wi-Fi & Starlink

Network: Arenas Negra. Password was included in your pre-arrival message. There's also a Wi-Fi porter hub on the console under the TV — just bring your phone close to it and it will sync the password to your device automatically. Powered by Starlink satellite, backed by the diesel generator — you stay connected even if the rest of the island goes dark.

Ocean conditions

The ocean changes day to day. One morning it can be glassy and calm; by afternoon it can produce Olympic-level surf. Always check conditions before entering the water and never swim alone.

Wildlife on the beach

You may see sea turtle nests below.

Yellow tape on the sand marks active nests being protected by local conservationists. Please don't cross the tape, avoid flashlights near the shore at night, and watch from a distance. Follow @YoAmoElTinglar on Instagram — they sometimes announce rare hatchling release events right here on this beach.

Ramon Andino

Live the authentic beach life. Don't vacation it.

I'd highly recommend renting a car. Part of the lifestyle here is getting behind the wheel, cruising down the coast, and stopping wherever looks good. I find excuses to drive PR-681 — the views are so incredible that if I need something from Home Depot, I'll take the long coastal route just to enjoy it. These aren't generic recommendations. These are the spots I actually go to when I'm staying at the house.

Beaches & Surf
Beaches & Surf

This stretch of coast has everything from protected coves for kids to world-class reef breaks. The ocean changes day to day — one morning it’s glassy and calm, by afternoon it can be heaving.

  • Playa Puerto Las Vacas

    Your backyard

The beach right behind Arenas Negra. It has a personality of its own — sometimes super tranquil, sometimes it puts out Olympic qualifier level waves. Talk with our guide to get a read on whether the beach is right for you and which parts are safe. This is also where the quarterly surf tournaments happen.

  • Playa Palmas Altas

    5 min · Barceloneta

This is where I taught my son how to boogey board and where my younger nephews come to swim. It’s a protected cove, safe for younger kids, and great for snorkeling.

  • Caza y Pesca Playa

    15 min · PR-681, Arecibo

Bring a boogey board and enjoy the sporty waves near the shoreline. I like to bring my longboards here — it’s the right balance of calm and sportiness for a longboard.

  • Hallows Surf Beach

    15 min · Garrochales, Arecibo

A local favorite. The entrance to the beach is straight out of the movies. The beach is expansive and awe-inspiring. This spot is a little special — you may need to check in with the local surfers. Just be respectful and understand you’re surfing at a spot near and dear to their hearts.

  • Mar ChiquitaRamon's pick

    20 min · Manatí

This place is a natural wonder. I used to come here as a child with my parents. One of my favorite places on Earth.

  • Playa Machuca

    Nearby

An underground favorite for surfers. You need to swim across the river — and potentially avoid the cayman that live in it. Named after the local surf legend Machuca.

  • Playa Puerto Hermina

    Nearby · Arecibo

A quiet, lesser-known beach with a raw, natural feel. Surrounded by cliffs and greenery, it feels secluded and peaceful — great for tide pools or just the sound of the ocean.

Eat, Drink & Cruise PR-681
Eat, Drink & Cruise PR-681

The house sits right on coastal road PR-681, and there are tons of restaurants along the road. Part of the experience is stopping at each spot for a drink or a bite — every place has its own unique coastal vibe. I find excuses to drive this road. The views are so incredible that if I need something from Home Depot, I’ll take the long coastal route just to enjoy it.

  • Arrecife 681Ramon's pick

    10 min · PR-681

My favorite place to have a proper meal on the coast. The sunsets are amazing, the mojitos are great, and the beachfront diner area is beautiful — a little more formal than Clandestino but still super chill. The drive along 681 to get here is unparalleled.

  • El ClandestinoRamon's pick

    15 min · Islote, Arecibo

Great drinks and tasty food, but what sets this place apart is the beachfront lounge in the back. Everyone loves this spot. My rooftop deck is partly inspired by that beachfront deck in the back.

  • Pura Pesca

    5 min · Barceloneta

Great service and notably delectable food. I got the mofongo rellenos de pulpo and the amarillos — they left me wondering if I had ever had perfectly cooked octopus before that moment and just how exciting of heights fried plantain can aspire to reach. The views are dramatic too — you can see the ocean in front of you, but also the tropical forest violently forcing its way into the coast. I’ve never seen nature be so furiously beautiful.

  • Bocata Smokehouse

    20 min · PR-681, Arecibo

Right off coastal route 681. The drive here is amazing, the food is great and protein-packed, the view is incredible — especially at sunset. I’m a repeat customer.

  • Ozean Food & Bar

    15 min · PR-681, Arecibo

Some of my funnest moments going out have been at Ozean. They stay open later and are known for karaoke, great music, and good food. I had the most fun when I gave myself permission to be open and let loose. Folks pick up on that and vibe with you — especially during karaoke.

  • Mr Wings Barceloneta

    5 min · CARR 684, Barceloneta

Hard to beat when they have live music and the locals come out in full force. The wings are great, the ambiance is authentic because of the local vibe, and they bring unique musical guests.

  • Zenen Pizza

    5 min · Barceloneta

Zenen isn’t just a pizzeria — it’s a beautiful experience. The Neapolitan style is authentic, with perfectly airy dough, crispy edges, and that wood-fired flavor. Every ingredient feels fresh, selected with intention and love for the art of pizza. The owner’s mentor won a global competition for the best pizza in the world in 2025, and it shows. If you’re a true pizza lover, this place is a must.

  • Panadería Jaryt’s

    5 min · Barceloneta

This is my local ‘Starbucks.’ Great coffee, bread, sandwiches, and the odd wrench if I ever need it. Grab one of their oatmeals or cornmeal breakfasts in the morning — PR has this type of breakfast dish down to an art form.

Worth the Drive
Worth the Drive

These are excursion-level meals — plan around them and make the drive part of the day.

  • Heladera Lares

    45 min · Lares

Legendary creative ice cream in a mountain town. Worth the winding drive through the interior.

  • La Casita 152

    45 min · Naranjito

This is where I plan to finish a day at Crash Boat — sunset, a mojito, and no rush. The rooftop is the move if it’s open.

  • Sal de Mar

    45 min · Aguadilla marina

One of the best sunset views on the west coast. Great spot to slow down, grab a drink, and let the day end properly after being in the water.

  • La Casita Blanca

1 hr · Santurce, San Juan

Iconic traditional cuisine in San Juan. If you make one food trip to the city, this is the one.

  • La FactoríaRamon's pick

1 hr · Old San Juan

A legendary bar scene in Old San Juan with multiple rooms and late nights. When it’s on, it’s unforgettable — dancing, music, and great energy. When I need to go dancing, I go to Factoría. Period.

  • Luquillo Beach

    1.5 hr · Luquillo

Wide, palm-lined beach with famously clear water — the classic Puerto Rico beach experience. Easy access, calm water on good days, and a high payoff without much planning.

Nature & Adventures
Nature & Adventures

From underground rivers to some of the largest cave systems in the Western Hemisphere — the north coast is full of places that make you feel like you stepped into another world.

  • Cueva del Indio

    15 min · PR-681, Arecibo

Great trail and spectacular views. It’s on PR-681, and I take any opportunity to drive down this coastal road.

  • Westside Adventures Cave TubingRamon's pick

    20 min · Arecibo

I love tubing. I’ve tubed all over NE USA during summer — if you know, you know. This is a bit of that magic in PR. My favorite excursion in the area.

  • Camuy Caves

    30 min

One of the largest cave systems in the Western Hemisphere. Feels like stepping into another world.

  • Lago Dos Bocas

    30 min · Arecibo

A mountain lake with boat-in restaurants. Take the free ferry across the lake, eat at one of the floating restaurants, and take the ferry back. A completely different Puerto Rico than the coast.

  • Gozalandia Waterfalls

    45 min · San Sebastián

Jungle waterfall with natural swimming holes. The hike in is short and the payoff is massive.

  • El Yunque National Forest

    2 hr · Rio Grande

The only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system. Lush, green, and dramatic, with waterfalls, trails, and mountain views. Far from Barceloneta and often busy, but impressive if you’ve never experienced a rainforest before.

  • Arecibo Promenade

    20 min · Arecibo

An oceanfront malecón perfect for a jog or walk. About a 3-mile stretch by awesome beaches. You’ll see surfers, joggers, and folks just enjoying life. I come here often — especially nice in the morning or near sunset.

Landmarks & Sightseeing
Landmarks & Sightseeing

Some of these are a short drive, some are full day trips. All of them are worth it.

  • Muelle de Barceloneta

    5 min · Barceloneta

Grab some beers and head to the pier to witness a sunset like no other. If you like to fish, this is a popular fishing hole.

  • Arecibo Lighthouse Historical Park

    20 min · Arecibo

Amazing drive, amazing views, historical significance. Let the kids run wild.

  • Estatua de Colón

    20 min · Arecibo

A scenic coastal monument offering wide, unobstructed views of the Atlantic and surrounding cliffs. Off the typical tourist path — great for photos and getting a sense of the island’s rugged north coast.

  • Viejo San Juan

    1 hr

Historic and vibrant, with colorful streets, old forts, bars, and restaurants packed into a walkable area. Far from Barceloneta and best experienced as a full day or overnight, but unmatched if you want history and energy.

  • Vieques

    2+ hr + ferry

A smaller, quieter island off Puerto Rico’s east coast known for undeveloped beaches and a slower pace. Getting there takes planning, but the reward is a different side of Puerto Rico that feels more remote and untouched. The bioluminescent bay alone is worth it.

Families & Fun
Families & Fun

Whether you have kids or just want something different for a few hours, these are all close by.

  • Hacienda Recreativa La Ceiba

    Nearby

Ride horses, rent ATVs, and other family adventures. A great way to spend a morning or afternoon.

  • Barceloneta Bowling Center

    5 min · Barceloneta

Pleasantly surprised for a government-run venue. State of the art equipment, super clean, staff is amazing, affordable prices, and amazing food. It’s relatively small so it gets crowded fast — try to get there early. They charge by the hour, not per game, so if you have any technical difficulties with your lane, make sure they add your minutes back.

  • Caribbean Cinemas

10 min · inside Premium Outlets

Great movie theater. Don’t go in shorts — movie theaters in PR get chilly.

  • Puerto Rico Premium Outlets

    10 min · Barceloneta

Good for people-watching, getting some AC, and letting the kids run wild. Military discount available in some stores — just ask. Wear comfortable shoes and sunblock if you’re staying a while.

  • Barceloneta Skate Park

    5 min · Barceloneta

Outdoor skate park close to the house.

  • Barceloneta Health & Fitness Center

    5 min · Barceloneta

This is how I start my day. The gym is excellent, the people are friendly, and you can buy short-term plans.

Nearby essentials
